If your child has shown any interest in robots, coding or engineering, chances are someone has mentioned the World Robot Olympiad — or WRO. But what exactly is it, how does it work in South Africa, and is it something your child could actually compete in? This guide covers everything you need to know.
What Is the World Robot Olympiad?
The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is the world's largest student robotics competition. Founded in 2004, it now runs in over 100 countries and involves more than 100,000 students every year. The mission is simple: give young people a real engineering challenge, let them solve it with robots, and see who does it best.
Unlike a science fair or a spelling bee, WRO is a team sport. Students work in pairs or groups of three, building autonomous robots that must complete a physical mission on a game mat — entirely without human control once the run begins. No remote controls. No last-minute adjustments. Just the robot, the code, and the team's preparation.
How Does WRO Work in South Africa?
South Africa runs its own national WRO programme with regional qualifying events held throughout the year, leading to the SA National Finals. Top-performing teams at Nationals earn the right to represent South Africa at the WRO International Finals — held in a different country each year.
South Africa competes across two tracks, each with their own categories:
Track 1: Explorer (SA Challenge)
Explorer is South Africa's home-grown on-ramp to competitive robotics. Teams arrive with a blank program — no pre-built solution. On competition day, they receive the season's mission and have a set time to code their robot live. It levels the playing field and tests real problem-solving under pressure.
- Explorer Lite — Ages 8–12. Beginner-friendly missions. Any LEGO kit, any block-coding language.
- Explorer Prime — Ages 11–16. Harder missions, tighter time limits. The stepping stone to RoboMission.
Track 2: RoboMission (International)
RoboMission is the flagship international WRO event. Robots must autonomously complete a themed mission on a randomised game field in under two minutes. Every season brings a new theme and new challenges — teams can't rely on last year's solutions.
- RoboMission Elementary — Ages 8–12. Teams of 2–3 students. Coaches stay off the floor during runs.
- RoboMission Junior — Ages 11–15. Bigger fields, more objects, randomised setup adds unpredictability.
- RoboMission Senior — Ages 14–19. Open-platform engineering. Python, custom electronics, 3D-printed parts all allowed within a 25×25×25 cm size limit.
The 2026 WRO theme is "Robots Meet Culture" — teams will build robots that interact with cultural and heritage concepts, combining engineering with social awareness.
What Do Kids Actually Learn?
Competing in WRO teaches children skills that go well beyond robotics. The preparation process — which typically spans an entire school term — covers:
- Mechanical engineering — understanding gears, levers, torque and structural stability
- Programming logic — sequencing, loops, conditionals, sensor calibration
- Teamwork and communication — deciding who builds, who codes, who manages time under pressure
- Resilience — robots fail. Teams learn to debug, iterate and stay composed in a competition environment
- Presentation skills — some categories include a judged interview component where teams explain their design decisions
How Do South African Teams Qualify?
The path to Nationals typically looks like this:
- Join a registered WRO training centre (like Robotics League)
- Train weekly throughout the school term using the current season's challenge
- Compete at a regional qualifier event in Gauteng, Western Cape, or KZN
- Top-placed teams from each region advance to the SA National Finals
- National winners in each category earn the chance to represent South Africa internationally

Does my child need prior experience to compete?
No. Most students start with zero robotics experience and work up to competition level over one or two terms. The Explorer Lite category is specifically designed as a first competition for beginners.
What equipment does my child need?
Nothing. Robotics League provides all LEGO® Education kits, laptops and WRO game mats in-class. Students do not need to own any equipment.
How much does it cost to compete?
Competition entry fees vary by event and are communicated to families ahead of each season. WRO training is included as part of the standard Robotics League programme — there is no additional weekly coaching fee for squad members.
Can younger children (under 8) get involved?
The youngest official WRO category starts at age 8. Our Robotics Little League programme (ages 4–6) builds the foundational skills — building, sequencing and logical thinking — so that when children reach age 7 or 8, they're already well ahead of the competition curve.
