If your child has started robotics classes — or you're thinking about enrolling them — you've probably heard the name LEGO SPIKE Prime. It sounds like a toy. It's not, quite. Understanding what it actually is helps parents appreciate why their children are learning skills that go far beyond what they'd pick up from a games console or a screen-based coding app.

What Is LEGO SPIKE Prime?

LEGO SPIKE Prime is an educational robotics kit made by LEGO Education — the separate arm of the LEGO Group that designs products specifically for schools and learning environments, as distinct from the LEGO sets you'd find in a toy shop.

At its core, SPIKE Prime is a combination of three things:

  1. A programmable hub — a smart central unit with a colour screen, built-in sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer), six connector ports, and Bluetooth
  2. Motors and sensors — large and medium motors, a distance sensor, a colour sensor, and a force sensor
  3. LEGO Technic bricks — the engineering-grade LEGO pieces (beams, axles, gears, connectors) used to build the robot's physical structure

Students combine these three elements to build a physical machine that they then program — using code they write themselves — to complete a task. The robot can move, sense its environment, react to obstacles, sort objects by colour, measure forces, and much more.

At Robotics League, students progress from Essential to Prime naturally as they advance through the Robotics Army programme. By the time a student is ready to compete in WRO RoboMission, they're fully comfortable with the Prime platform.

How Do Kids Program It?

SPIKE Prime uses the LEGO Education SPIKE app, which supports three coding modes that students can move between as they grow:

Word Blocks

Visual drag-and-drop coding using labelled blocks in plain English. Students snap blocks together to create sequences, loops and conditions — like building with code instead of writing it. No syntax errors, no blank screens. Perfect for beginners.

MicroPython

Real Python code. Same logic as Word Blocks but written as typed text. Students who've mastered blocks switch to Python to gain precision, speed and the ability to write more complex autonomous programs. This is the coding language used in most tertiary STEM programmes worldwide.

Python is used by engineers at NASA, Google, SpaceX and every major tech company on earth. A student who learns Python on SPIKE Prime at 12 has a meaningful head start on a career in any technical field.

What Skills Does SPIKE Prime Actually Build?

Parents often ask whether the skills children learn on SPIKE Prime transfer to anything "real." The answer is yes — directly and measurably.

Mechanical thinking

Students learn about gear ratios, torque multiplication, structural load-bearing, and the trade-off between speed and power. These are the same concepts covered in secondary school physics and in first-year mechanical engineering — except students encounter them hands-on, at age 10.

Computational thinking

Writing a program that makes a robot navigate a course autonomously requires decomposing a complex problem into discrete steps, thinking about what could go wrong, and writing code that handles edge cases. This is exactly what software engineers do every day.

Debugging and iteration

Robots never work perfectly on the first attempt. A student who has spent two terms making a SPIKE Prime robot complete a WRO course reliably has developed a methodical, evidence-based approach to problem-solving that serves them across every discipline.

Do Parents Need to Buy a Kit?

No. Robotics League provides all SPIKE Essential and SPIKE Prime kits in-class. Students use the equipment during their session and it stays at the venue. This means:
