How Do Kids Program It?
SPIKE Prime uses the LEGO Education SPIKE app, which supports three coding modes that students can move between as they grow:
Word Blocks
Visual drag-and-drop coding using labelled blocks in plain English. Students snap blocks together to create sequences, loops and conditions — like building with code instead of writing it. No syntax errors, no blank screens. Perfect for beginners.
MicroPython
Real Python code. Same logic as Word Blocks but written as typed text. Students who've mastered blocks switch to Python to gain precision, speed and the ability to write more complex autonomous programs. This is the coding language used in most tertiary STEM programmes worldwide.

Computational thinking
Writing a program that makes a robot navigate a course autonomously requires decomposing a complex problem into discrete steps, thinking about what could go wrong, and writing code that handles edge cases. This is exactly what software engineers do every day.
Debugging and iteration
Robots never work perfectly on the first attempt. A student who has spent two terms making a SPIKE Prime robot complete a WRO course reliably has developed a methodical, evidence-based approach to problem-solving that serves them across every discipline.
